Endless Options

When it comes to wedding stationery, like choosing the perfect dress there are endless options when it comes to design, style, shape, and printing.

Most invitations today are digitally printed which means invitations are printed directly form a digital file on a computer.  Digital printers transfer four colours of ink (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) to paper simultaneously producing a full colour print after only one pass through the printer.  This method takes no time at all and is usually the less expensive print option.  Digital printing produces a flat coloured image with no texture and can produce beautiful results.

Newly introduced to Paper Airplanes is Letterpress printing.  Letterpress printed invitations truly leave an impression on your guests - literally!

This relief print method dates back to the late 1800's and uses a press with a high type bed printing press which means that your design is made into a photo polymer plate and mounted into the printing press which will make an impression of your design on paper.  The photo polymer plate is a raised version of the design and as the rollers roll over the plate it leaves ink on the raised sections.  The inked plate is then pressed into paper.  All ink is mixed by hand and once the press is all ready to go every piece of paper is manually fed through and then taken out once the impression has been made.  Letterpress is a beautiful and elegant print method.

Wedding Style Inspiration: Dusty Rose

Many of the principles and elements of design also apply to other areas of life; for example, coordinating a great outfit, decorating a space... or planning a wedding!
First things first.  You must be inspired!  Find a jumping off point for your planning.  This could be a fabric swatch, a favorite flower, a photograph, etc.  In the inspiration board above, I started with images 6 and 10, and used the dusty pink color to collect other images in that palette that inspired me.
To pull off a cohesive look, it's important to consider different aspects of the design, such as: color, balance, harmony, repetition and texture.  Likewise, as you search blogs and websites for information, try to group the images you save according to style.  This should help you to determine what ideas (dresses, fabrics, linens, invitations, flowers, etc!) that you're repeatedly drawn to. Compiling an inspiration board like the one above can be a great way to keep you on track and focused on a singular, cohesive style that will result in an overall pulled-together look!
Most importantly, your wedding style should be a reflection of you - so have fun with this aspect of the planning, and add some personal touches to make it your own.

Choosing your Wedding Photographer

Inspired by an article written by one of my favourite photographers, I thought this is a great topic for brides who are in the process of selecting their wedding photographer.

Selecting your wedding photographer is potentially one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding day. Photographs become a part of your family history. Your photographs are memories captured in time, bringing you back to the emotions and moments of your special day.

There are a few elements to consider during the process of choosing your wedding photographer.

The Photographs
Spend some time looking at wedding blogs, magazines, and photographers’ websites and get a feel for what types of images resonate with you. What is it about the photographs that make you pause, notice and appreciate the art? Is it the colour palette, the lighting, the emotion, the location, the pose? Photography is a very intimate art form. The photographs should reflect your individual style and your personality.

Another thing to consider is, do you prefer more candid shots? Or would you prefer direction from your photographer? Some photographers specialize in a documentary style of photography where they are there to document the day, capture great candid moments, and provide minimal direction. I tend to insert myself into most situations where I will provide direction to the wedding couple, so that the images look and feel exactly how I envision them to be. All of the images you will find on my portfolio are directed. I find that the special intimate moments will arise naturally within the poses, which gives me the perfect opportunity to shoot that frame.  Neither style is better than the other. It is simply a preference to consider.

The Photographer
Something most people don’t realize is that a good wedding photographer will be with you throughout the majority of your wedding day. They will be there capturing all of your special moments - from getting ready to your first dance, and everything in between. It is a delicate balance for a photographer to capture the intimate moments, yet be unobtrusive. The more comfortable you feel, and the more trust you have for your wedding photographer the more natural your photos will be.

The Budget
There is an array of talented photographers to suit every budget. Take the time to meet with the photographers’ with whom you have found a connection. Most photographers will offer a range of coverage and products. The variance of prices, packages and styles between photographers can be overwhelming. Try to look at a large body of their work to get a sense of their experience and their style. The quality and consistency of the photographs is something to take notice of. You will quickly get a sense of what is important to you, and how you want your day to be captured and remembered. As you consider your budget and how you prioritize your finances, never underestimate the value of photography. Your wedding photographs will be your family’s heirlooms, which you should be proud to share with your friends and family.
